Although We Keep Our Blog,

away from politics, religion and news,

well there are enough out there with the serious stuff, I had to mention this new book, which raises the question is there a Hell? and if so what would it be like?

various scenes of pain and suffering are depicted,

as the book collects almost 600 pages of works designated as Japanese National Treasures and features the various depictions of hell by artists such as Kazunobu Kanō,Yoshitoshi Tsukioka and the master of horror Kyōsai Kawanabe,

the book is being released in October has collected a wide range of images that depict hell in Japanese art from the 12th century to the 19th century,

“God of Heavenly Punishment.” From the scroll “Extermination of Evil” ( 1127 – 1192 AD), and the others above will be included,

essays from historians of both Japanese art and Buddhism are included in bilingual text, the book is titled Hell in Japanese Art and is available for pre-order from Amazon, and no I am not on commission, but seeing the illustrations above reminded me of the Horniman Museum that did, many years ago, have many examples of this kind of art.
